(THE SUICIDE SQUAD Title Card - DC Entertainment/Warner Bros. Pictures 2021)
2021 Saw the release of Director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, While the movie is still in theaters the critical and audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive. So much so that it's certainly hopeful to see a sequel to this film. I myself enjoyed the film and am eager for a sequel. That being said I am curious as to whom might join the team in a follow-up and decided to throw a few fun suggestions into the ring. First a simple reminder of the film's surviving members (who would be considered 'on the team'):
The Surviving Team:
(THE SUICIDE SQUAD Character Posters, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures)
Robert DuBois/Bloodsport - Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2, Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn - Nanaue/King Shark.
Hopefully these four return, while Peacemaker does live, I figure since he's getting his own show, he might sit out on a sequel, though if he pops up it'll be fun to see.
The list isn't made in any specific order save for maybe the top 10. This is just the order inwhich I thought everyone up for this idea. Now, I'm NOT suggesting every single one of these choices pop up in a sequel, I'm just presenting 30 Characters here who I'd like to see pop up in any capacity in future Suicide Squad Movies with very little fancasting behind them. In fact I use Popular choices as well as Choices that other figures (I.E. Zack Snyder) have stated they would use for the specific character with Maybe 1 of my genuine fancast choices in here. This also features a few choices that have appeared previously with the same performer reprising the roles. So without anymore stalling: Here are my 30 Characters I'd like to see in a THE SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel:
30. Eric Needham/Black Spider
Another self styled Vigilante seems like it might be a repeat of Peacemaker but honestly that's not entirely bad. He's got a decent amount of character to him and could really mean something in the movie or even carry over in a supporting role in a spin off. He's a fun character who should be brought into the Squad.
29. Lester Buchinsky/The Electricutioner
He is a character kinda tailor-made for Canon fodder. He's got a cool name and cool suit and really little personality. He's someone Gunn could really explore and do something different with and kill him off.
28. Patrick "Eel" O'Brien/Plastic Man
I love the character, he's unique and every it a comedic asshole. He's almost the perfect Ryan Reynolds role and could add a great deal of comedy and "WTF" to the team. It would be a neat way of seeing the character make that transition from hero to Villain even if he needs a mentor (Like one of the Batmen)
27. Barbara Minverva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig)
By all accounts the character never got to live up to what fans expected, largely because the story didn't let her. She's a great actress and was a stand out in the role and bringing her back would be a way to make amends for wasting her in WW84.
26. Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Carla Gugino)
(Carla Gugino as Catwoman)
Gugino was unofficially cast in the role. This version was married and later divorced Bruce and Gugino was always Zack Snyder's pick. This version of Catwoman could really be a team leader and could be fun for the audience to see. The character's criminal history already puts her in the right spot for nefarious government work.
25.Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy
People were already wanting the character to pop up and with her connection to Harley, it kinda makes her important. She could have a great role in the story and really keep the gate open for Harley to hold a central role in the story.
24. Lonnie Machin/Anarky
He is a character victimized by the Joker and really became that philosophy of "Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you Stranger". He's got a unique character to him that really fits for a wild card on the team and is the right kind of DC villain for the Squad.
23. Helena Bertinelli/The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)
(Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress, BIRDS OF PREY, DC Entertainment/Warner Bros.)
She was loved in BOP and given little to do. She's a rogue character that plays by her own rules and is inherently perfect for the team. Plus Mary Elizabeth Winstead was absolutely praised in the role so why not take advantage of it.
22. Cyrus Gold/Solomon Grundy
King Shark was certainly an exercise in Big Dumb Creature and that's kinda the role that Solomon Grundy could play. He has gained some popularity and this would be a unique use of the character.
21. Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
There was once a script that put Green Arrow in prison, called Escape from Supermax. It was a neat idea that inspired this. Green Arrow is certainly a more outspoken character, politically, and would work for an audience surrogate or as a moral center to the team who needs to learn that these villains aren't all monsters.
20. Drury Walker/Killer Moth
Killer Moth was originally supposed to be the Anti-Batman but has certainly changed over the years. He is a fun and oddball character that you can do a lot with, from tech-guy, to supply-guy, to fighter. He'd be a great addition.
19. Waylon Jones/Killer Croc (Adewale
Akinnuoye-Agbaje)
Loved the character in the first one, especially the practicality of how they brought him to life and I want to see more of him.
18. Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost
(Killer Frost JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA Villain's Month Issue, DC Comics)Killer Frost is a unique character that has a great amount of tragedy and villainy to her. She has a unique powers that stands out and could be a breakout character for the squad.
17. Copperhead 2
I'm more familiar with this version from Arkham Origins and certainly from that game the character was frightening and unique among the other villains. She has a a quirkiness about her that really suits her for the squad.
16. Arthur Brown/Cluemaster
Many probably see Cluemaster as a discount Riddler and while he certainly leans into that there is a layer of pathetic imbued with the character that makes him stand out, while also have a very famous daughter: Stephanie Brown. Adding him into the mix is an easy way of world building the bat family and having fun with an obscure character.
15. Irwin Schwab/Ambush Bug
He's really the perfect James Gunn character. He has an equal amount of obscurity, oddness, and charm to fit in these movies. He has a bizarre origin that could really fit the overall ambiance of the series.
14. Charles Brown/Kite Man
Kite Man is a ridiculous character that has gained a cult following in recent years and it would be fun to take advantage of that. He's got a unique gadget set and could be utilized as either Canon fodder or create an underdog-esq arc for the movie.
13. Owen Mercer/Captain Boomerang 2 (Josh Lawson)
(Josh Lawson as Owen Mercer/Captain Boomerang 2)
We need a Captain Boomerang, he was the best part of the first film and his death in the 2nd hurt my opinion of it a little bit. Thankfully DC has another Boomerang. While in the Comics Owen is the Son of Digger, in this version he could be featured as an older half brother, who takes the name in honor of his little brother. Maybe for the sake of differentiating the two, this version could be a metahuman with Plasma Boomerangs (an idea used in the Justin Mark's draft) and/or limited super speed. Josh Lawson, after his role in Kano, became a popular candidate for the role and while this isn't the role he's typically seen in it works for continuity.
12.Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana (Karen Fukuhara)
She was a badass in the first film and really should be brought back. The character and performer certainly deserve a reprise on film.
11. Jason Todd/The Red Hood (John Boyega)
(John Boyega as Jason Todd/The Red Hood)
The franchise is DCEU, and in the DCEU Dick Grayson died. That doesn't mean Jason Todd never joined Batman. This version could hate Batman for the reckless lifestyle he forced upon Dick (who Jason would see as a Brother) causing that permanent split. His hatred for the Joker could build some fun and unique chemistry with Harley and could show how dynamic an actor John Boyega is, since he's been the most vocal about wanting the role.
10. King Faraday
A world class spy and high profile government agent. He would work wonderfully as a foil for Waller and someone who might very well outrank her. He is a strong Character to really match wits with Waller.
09.Cole Cash/Grifter
I love Grifter and he gets very little love outside of comics. He's certainly someone who could fill that cool factor and garner some spin off love. He's a character that would stand out to the audience the way Deadpool did for Marvel.
08. Leonard Snart/Captain Cold
We need some sort of Flash villain and really with his unique attributes (a tech guy and a moral bad guy) with such a unique weapon against everyone else he would be a perfect stand out to add to the team.
07. Sgt. Franklin Rock (Jon Bernthal)
(Jon Bernthal as Sgt. Frank Rock)
I love Sgt. Rock. He's a strong character that you can really expand. You could get an actor like Bernthal to pull double duty, playing the original Sgt. Rock in the past leading it to a plot set in modern day as well as him playing the Modern Day decendant of Sgt. Rock. The character is great and could certainly fill either a moral or governmental role for the team.
06. Bane (Dave Bautista)
(Dave Bautista as Bane)
Bautista wants to be Bane, not my top choice but I can see Gunn casting him. Bane is one of, if not my favorite Batman villain. He is a self centered character and is a very ideal character to focus a redemption arc on.
05. Benjamin Turner/Bronze Tiger
A hell of a character, he's one of DC's top Martial Artists and has been routinely linked to the team numerous times through numerous incarnations of the team. He has the look and talent to stand out as a badass to see on the team.
04.Bruce Wayne/Batman (Michael Keaton)
(Michael Keaton as Batman in BATMAN RETURNS, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures)
(Michael Keaton as Batman in BATMAN RETURNS, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures)
He's meant to be the new Batman of the DCEU and while he's a great character, the team needs a moral center and if he is taking such a central stage in that role then he should start by being a leader and a moral center that reforms these villains.
03. David Hyde/Black Manta (Yahya Adbul-Mateen II)
Yahya was, for me, the breakout star of the movie. He was an interesting and frightening villain who really had a great place in the movie. Black Manta is a great and layered character and a perfect choice to join the team.
02. Slade Wilson/Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello)
We never got much of Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke but from what little we got he sounded like an absolute force to be reckon with. He's a great character and I'd love to see him pop up, especially since it's been revealed he was originally in The Suicide Squad.
01. Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Will Smith)
I loved Will Smith as Deadshot. He was great in the role and made it something more than just a standard 'Will Smith' role and put some real heart in the performance. I was hoping to have gotten the Deadshot spin off and was hoping to see him make an appearance in The Suicide Squad. There's no doubt he's the number one choice I'd love to see pop up in another Suicide Squad Movie.
Who do you wanna see in the Suicide Squad?
Honestly, this is a really great line up of potential characters to use. I personally would love to see Squad regulars like Killer Frost, Black Spider, Killer Frost, and Bronze Tiger, as well as C-list second stringers like Cluemaster, Anarky, Killer Moth, and Kite Man.
ReplyDeleteI also dig your ideas and castings for characters like Red Hood, Frank Rock, and Captain Boomerang II (I'm glad we're both in the same boat about being really salty on Captain Boomerang being killed off in the sequel).
Currently working on my editorial for characters I'd like to see used in future Suicide Squad movies, along with potential actors to play them. Still, this is pretty great stuff here.
I can't wait to read it!
DeleteI think these characters would make a great addition to The Suicide Squad. That being said, there are a few on here like Batman himself that I just feel like “Yes, it would be cool for him to work with the team.” But, to be a part of the team, I would scratch my head. Still, great job on the list.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it!
