May of 2019, Netflix and Dark Horse signed a First look deal for content, adapting characters published under the dark horse banner for the streaming platform. Since Hellboy has found little luck in theatrical adaptations (While Del Toro’s films are wonderful their box office was widely considered to be lacking). Following an abysmally performed reboot, and two cult favorite films that underperformed to high standards there still exists an audience for Hellboy. It’s really a wonder why Hellboy hasn’t been tapped for a Live Action Series, the comic has all the hallmarks of a perfect television series: Episodic Stories, A Through Line that concludes an overarching story, A Beginning, Middle, and End, and (most importantly) a charming and endearing ensemble cast perfect for gaining the hearts of an audience.
Hellboy Television Series B... by Robert Garlen
Phillip Rousselot [Notable Works:
Interview with a Vampire, Sherlock Holmes, Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them]: With work steeped into Gothic Horror as well as
Detective fiction and Action movies, no one blends the style better than
Phillip and this makes him a perfect candidate to help bring Hellboy back to
theaters.
Greg Nicotero [Notable Works: The
Walking Dead, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Preacher]: For
the look of creatures it’s hard to argue anyone would be better than Greg
Nicotero. His work with creatures is legendary, as well as well steeped in the
horror genre. With his body of work there is no doubt that Nicotero would
create a Hellboy look as Iconic as either Mignola or Perlman’s.
Trish Sumerville [Notable Works: The
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Dark Tower, Mank]: Her work
with The Dark Tower has stood out, it was great costuming on her part
and there’s no doubt her work would be perfect to adapt the look of the
B.P.R.D. Agents as well as Hellboy’s iconic coat look.
Rick Heinrichs [Notable Works: Sleepy Hollow, The Wolfman, Dark Shadows]: His work with Gothic settings and 18th century style designs has made him the proper choice for the Production Designer. There is no doubt that Rick would be able to do something none of the other films have done properly and bring Mike Mignola’s world to the big screen to fit along-side the characters.
Bear McCreary [Notable Works: The
Walking Dead, God of War (2018), Hellfest]: With work as
dramatic and as iconic as the work Bear McCreary has churned out it’s hard to
imagine anyone else who has the background or the pedigree to give Hellboy a
proper score. He has never done anything obscenely gothic and seeing him take
on that challenge and evolve as an artist would be wonderful to see. His work
on God of War alone makes him perfect to score a Hellboy series.
Jason Blum [Notable Works {In
Television}: Sacred Lies, Into the Dark, The Purge ]: A
true Legend in Hollywood and a pioneer for the horror genre as well as creative
freedom for Creators Blum and Blumhouse Pictures have created a measure of good
faith appealing to Horror fans guaranteeing at the very least an excited
audience whenever Blum and Blumhouse is involved.
Mike Mignola [Notable Works {As A
Producer}: Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy
(2019)]: Being the creator of Hellboy it makes sense to attach him as a
producer of any Hellboy media that comes out. He is a genius and his work with
his creation is legendary and should be shown. I think in this kind of venture,
doing a television series, his participation could be a little bit more
willing, writing episodes, being more open in wanting to be apart of the series
while also letting the vision shine through.
Akiva Goldsman [Notable Works {As A Producer}: Constantine,
I Am Legend, The Dark Tower]: His work with certain properties
might be controversial but he’s worked with some great dark material and has
created some cult classic movies. He would be someone that would help get the
series made.
Lawrence Gordon [Notable Works: Hellboy
(2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy (2019)]: Having been
tied to the franchise from the very beginning Lawrence Gordon has been
instrumental in getting Hellboy on the big screen and he’s bound to keep at it.
Lloyd Levin [Notable Works:
Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy (2019)]:
A producer who has been tied to the character’s theatrical exploits. While he
was part of the team that gave us the two Del Toro films, he also was part of
the Reboot that led a troubled production. He’s certainly got passion for the
character, but in this setting it’s best to try something new, and with his
obvious attachment to the character he will be a necessary voice in continuing
adaptations with the character.
Mike Richardson [Notable Works:
Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy (2019)]:
He has a bit of a history in producing and working in television. He’s best
known as the head of Dark Horse, and being that Dark Horse Signed a first look
deal with Netflix, it would make sense to see him as a producer on a Hellboy
Netflix series.
Evan Goldberg [Notable Works: The
Disaster Artists, Preacher, The Boys]: A fan of comics and a
person moving into producing darker and edgier material over comedy, Goldberg’s
efforts with Preacher and the Boys show how attentive he is too tone and spirit
making him a fantastic choice to produce Hellboy.
Seth Rogen [Notable Works: The
Disaster Artists, Preacher, The Boys]: Having shown range
with various projects and having shown heart for the material Seth has shown he
is able to break away from Comedy and bringing the spirit of whatever projects
he works on to the fold. With his spiritually faithful adaptations of Garth
Ennis creator owned work, there’s no doubt Seth would protect Hellboy and give
him a proper reboot.
Sam Catlin [Notable Works: Breaking
Bad, Rake, Preacher]: After seeing 4 seasons of Preacher
wonderfully adapted, taking the tone and core story of the Garth Ennis comic,
there’s no doubt Sam is a figure worthy of taking the Hellboy material and
giving it new life on television. He’s a great writer who’s worked on two of
AMC’s best series and has miraculously kept up with the quality as the series’
progressed. He’s got an eye for action, horror, and the supernatural making him
perfect for Hellboy.
Carlton Cuse [Notable Works: Bates
Motel, The Strain, Locke and Key]: Between his work on Bates
Motel and The Strain, Cuse has absolutely the credentials to give us
a perfect horror fueled Hellboy series. He’s worked with other showrunners
before {see Bates Motel} and while he’s currently working with Netflix, it
would be great to see him co-develop a Hellboy series, as his voice is unique
and perfect for such a character and universe.
Hellboy [Height: 6’ 4”, Age: 70’s {Physically appears to be in his 30’s}]: The demon was supposed to be summoned off the shore of Scotland by Rasputin's Project Ragna Rok, but instead appeared at a ruined church near East Bromwich, England where it was found with an extremely large rock arm by Allied troops, adopted by Trevor Bruttenholm, and named as Hellboy. Over the years, Hellboy was granted honorary human status by the United Nations, and then raised by the U.S. Government as the lead agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), where he worked with Abe Sapien (an icthyo sapien), Liz Sherman (a pyrokinetic) and Roger (a large homunculus). Hellboy is America's first line of defense against occult menaces. Hellboy grew up to be a large, red-skinned demon with a tail, horns (which he filed off, leaving behind the signature circular stumps on his forehead), and an over-sized right hand made of stone.
Kevin
Durand [Height: 6’ 6”, Age: 47, Notable Works: X-Men Origins: Wolverine,
Real Steel, The Strain]: The best argument for Durand as Hellboy
is his work as Vasiliy Fet in The Strain. He’s a wonderful actor, he’s
in wonderful shape, standing at a towering 6’ 6” and has that down-to-earth
attitude that made Hellboy such a popular character. His work outside of Fet
has seen him play intimidating and powerful figures, this is an opportunity to
see him play a more nuanced character like Hellboy, where there’s the black and
white elements of the job and the shades of Grey where Hellboy acts on his conscience
versus his duty. Allowing Durand, a character that has such a clear internal
battle {fighting all aspects of his destiny} and letting Durand develop that
over the course of the series would be an absolute treat for both Durand and
Fans of Hellboy. This casting is an absolute win, and he is no doubt the
perfect choice for Hellboy.
Jessie
Buckley [Height: 5’ 7”, Age: 31, Notable Works: Beast, Chernobyl, Judy]:
An up-and-coming Irish actress, who’s already seen roles in critically
acclaimed series such as Taboo and Chernobyl, she’s proven to
show some heart in her work and play characters that stand out and remain
memorable. Putting her as Alice puts her in a role that acts more on the
morality of a character, as Alice goes through the process of falling in love
with Hellboy, while also knowing what his Destiny is leading too. She cares for
Hellboy and stands tall to try to keep himself while also understanding what
she can and can’t do.
Aubrey Plaza [Height: 5’ 6” Age: 36,
Notable Works: Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Legion]:
There was really no one I could think of that would be better for the role.
Aubrey, to me, is just the perfect pick for Liz. I think she would meld well
with the attitude and the style of the character to an impressive degree. I
could see Aubrey disappearing in this role and seeing Liz come out.
Nicholas Hoult [Height: 6’ 3”, Age:
31, Notable Works: Skins, X-Men {Franchise}, The Great]:
He’s a wonderful actor who’s done exceptional work as an actor. He’s best known
for his amazing performance as Hank McCoy/Beast, a role that saw him heavily
garbed in make-up. He’s a notable stand out of this generation and really
brings a level of introspect and humanity to his characters that is sorely
needed to bring Abe Sapien back to life. He’s a wonderful actor and having him
play Abe would further challenge Hoult as an actor and no doubt turn out an
amazing performance.
Deborah Ann Woll [Height: 5’ 10”,
Age: 35, Notable Works: True Blood, Daredevil, Escape Room]:
A fantastic actress whose roles have shown heart and humility among
extraordinary circumstances. She has got an edge of self-reliance and strength
that makes her a perfect candidate to play Hellboy’s confidant.
Lee Byung-Hun [Height: 5’ 10”, Age:
50, Notable Works: I Saw The Devil, Red 2, Mr. Sunshine]:
One of my favorite actors, Lee has shown some pretty stellar work given some
unique material. Lee has no doubt the comedic and dramatic gravitas to take
Daimio as a character and really develop something wholly unique and strong,
properly honoring the character as he is in the comics.
Tom Hopper [Height: 6’ 5”, Age: 36,
Notable Works: Merlin, Black Sails, The Umbrella Academy]:
One of the most interesting actors I’ve seen that has been getting recent
exposure. From his emotional and heartfelt performance in The Umbrella Academy,
to his stern and strong characterization in Black Sails, he stands as someone
who could take the role of Roger turn it into an even bigger character by bringing
him to a global audience.
Aiden Gillen [Height: 5’ 9”, Age:
52, Notable Works: Game of Thrones, The Dark Knight Rises, Peaky
Blinders]: He’s one of the most intriguing and magnetic actors that I’ve
seen. He’s always a treat to see pop up in anything. Bringing his unique talent
and witty characterization to Johann would bring the character to life the way Mignola
envisioned.
Shawn Ashmore [Height: 5’ 11”, Age:
41, Notable Works: X-Men {Franchise}, The Following, The Boys {Season
2}]: After a wonderful and deep performance as Lamplighter, I’ve been wanting
to see him take on a more serialized role that plays with a sense of ambiguity,
giving him a strong role in the story while also letting him play to his
introspective and character strengths. He plays wonderful “good” centered
characters as well as irredeemable characters, giving him a character like
Leach that has bit more moral greyness to them as well as Leach’s ability to
talk to Liz and get her to speak about her troubles.
Toby Leonard Moore [Height: 6’ 2”,
Age: 39, Notable Works: John Wick, Daredevil, Billions]: From
the tone of his voice to the presence of his character, Toby Leonard Moore has
stood out an actor who echoes sternness and strength in mannerism. He is a
great actor who can take a character like Manning and making him uniquely
neutral in a moral sense without appearing either cold or uncaring. Seeing him
as Manning would give the character some serious gravitas and make him less of
the bureaucratic caricature that Jeffrey Tambor played.
Isaiah Mustafa [Height: 6’ 4”, Age:
46, Notable Works: Crush, Shadowhunters, IT: Chapter Two]:
Isaiah is a wonderful actor who has a history of playing strong lovable
characters. He’s an actor who can take an innocuous character who dies very
quickly in his appearances in the comic and make him memorable and effective as
a character.
Cobie Smulders [Height: 5’ 8”, Age:
38, Notable Works: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. {Guest Appearances}, Jack
Reacher: Never Go Back, Stumptown]: One of the strongest performers
working. Having created a bit of a cult persona, playing strong, no nonsense
characters, Cobie stands out in her work. Never one to avoid levity or action
Cobie is the perfect actress to take Raskin and turn her into a character that
fits as the role she plays in the comics.
Olivia Thirlby [Height: 5’ 4”, Age:
34, Notable Works: The Darkest Hours, Dredd, Goliath]: One
of my favorite actresses working. She’s got a charm and an energy that shows
she can bring strength and struggle to her characters. She’s the perfect
actress to bring Strode to the big screen.
Jason R. Moore [Height: 6’ 1”, Age:
N/A, Notable Works: Killjoy Goes to Hell, The Punisher, The
Quad]: I love his work, he’s a great actor and he’s fun in his work. He
gives strong performances and plays likeable characters. Seeing him bring that
charm and energy he brought to The Punisher would be greatly welcomed
with Nichols.
Sterling
K. Brown [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Supernatural {Guest
Appearances}, Black Panther, This is Us]: He’s a remarkable actor
making a big impact with his performances. He’s garnered praise and a fanbase
through his numerous appearances in projects both big and small, giving him a
role that shows him in authority would play to his strengths and let him cover
some new ground. He plays morally ambiguous wonderfully and there’s plenty of
those moments with Devon that would allow Sterling to stand out and stand
strong among an ensemble of wonderful actors.
Isabela
Merced [Height: 5’ 1”, Age: 19, Notable Works: Transformers: The Last Knight,
Instant Family, Sicario: Day of the Saldado]: A wonderful actress
who’s just beginning what can be a storied and dynamic career. She’s played
numerous roles but putting her in a role that deals with the internal troubles
of feeling outcast. She’s a strong actress who can take that role and make it
one of those well-known performances that are beloved by fans.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau [Height: 6’
2”, Age: 50, Notable Works: Game of Thrones, Shot Caller, The
Silencing]: He’s a strong actor that really fits the profile for Howards.
He’s got a strong edge to him and a commanding presence perfect to bring
Howards to life. He’s got the look, talent, and charisma to be definitive in
the role.
Robin Lord Taylor [Height: 5’ 6”,
Age: 42, Notable Works: Cold Comes the Night, Gotham, John
Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum]: It’s a role he’s never played and with so much
of his career ahead of him, he’s got to take advantage of playing different and
unique characters. He’s an actor that can bring some weight and purpose to the
role.
James
Marsden [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 47, Notable Works: X-Men {Franchise}, Westworld,
Sonic The Hedgehog]: He’s got a very classic movie star look to him and
his presence is like that of actors of the 40’s and 50’s that gives him a sense
of class and heroism to bring to the role. He would be absolutely fun and
invested in the role.
Professor Trevor Bruttenholm [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 105 {Physically appears in his 70’s}]: Professor Trevor Bruttenholm was an expert of the occult, the first and former director of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and the parental guardian of Hellboy.
John
Glover [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 76, Notable Works: In the Mouth of Madness, Smallville,
Shazam!]: He’s a wonderful actor who’s built a storied career. He’s done
wonderful work as an actor and has been best known for the role that air him in
the light of being a bad father and I think it would be neat for him to have
raised one good Heroic child in his comic book adaptations. He’s got the
gravitas and emotional weight to bring impact to Bruttenholm’s death.
Lara
Pulver [Height: 5’ 3”, Age: 40, Notable Works: Sherlock, Da Vinci’s
Demons, Underworld Blood Wars]: A wonderful Actress, one of my
favorites who holds a level of class and intrigue with her performances, giving
her the suitable air of mystique for Lady Jones.
Andrew
Scott [Height: 5’ 8”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Sherlock, Black Mirror,
His Dark Materials]: He’s a wonderful actor and I’ve been wanting to see
him dip his toe in comic book adaptations. Having such a history with morally ambiguous
characters, Frost stands as a wonderful character for Scott to portray.
Myanna
Buring [Height: 5’ 2”, Age: 41, Notable Works: The Descent, Ripper
Street, The Witcher]: After seeing her performance in The Witcher,
Myanna is really the only choice for Morgan Le Fay, she’s a wonderful actress
who can nail the mannerisms and the presence of the character effortlessly.
Sean
Bean [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 61, Notable Works: Troy, Silent Hill, Game
of Thrones]: A wonderful actor who’s done some amazing and unique things
with his characters. While Arthur doesn’t play a dominant role, his
representation in the story is pertinent as he represents the theme of Destiny
that Hellboy rebels against.
Robert
Carlyle [Height: 5’ 8”, Age: 59, Notable Works: Ravenous, The World
is Not Enough, Once Upon A Time]: A role truly unlike the work he is
known for, having built a career off playing mostly intimidating villains,
Carlyle is a unique and versatile actor. He’s done amazing work in his roles
but hasn’t had many opportunities to show something different from sinister
characters. Giving him a role like Merlyn lets him play with a different
character and develop something new for the character that hasn’t been seen in
other adaptations of the mythic character.
Jason
Flemyng [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 54, Notable Works: From Hell, The League
of Extraordinary Gentlemen, X-Men: First Class]: A hell of an actor that
has often been typecast in darker roles, and more morally ambiguous characters.
Sir Edward Grey would be a neat exercise in seeing him play a more morally
light character and a more mentor-like figure.
Alice
Braga [Height: 5’ 4”, Age: 37, Notable Works: I Am Legend, Predators,
Queen of the South]: Alice is a wonderful actress that has really played
some tough and intriguing characters, seeing her play something that is rooted
more in sympathy rather then strength, making her appearance in the series show
different sides of character, playing a more violent vampire and late a sweet
and more ‘human’ character.
Mads Mikkelsen [Height: 6’ 0”, Age:
55, Notable Works: Casino Royale, Hannibal, Doctor Strange]:
There’s really no one else I could really put in this role. He’s a fantastic
actor, already haven brazenly taken a Legendary Role and perfected it in his
turn as Hannibal Lecter. He’s played every manner of sinister. He took an MCU
role with little screen time and developed a very decent character arc. If
anyone could take Rasputin and do something unique and interesting with the
role, it would be Mads.
Thomas
Krestchmann [Height: 5’ 11”, Age: 58, Notable Works: Blade 2, Dracula,
Berlin Station]: Really after his appearance in Age of Ultron, I
really just couldn’t see anyone else stepping into the role. He’s an amazing
actor and can really do some unique things with the role to keep the character
in line with the comics while also exploring new ground.
Marton
Csokas [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 54, Notable Works: The Amazing Spider-Man 2,
Into Badlands, The Luminaries]: He’s a wonderful actor and has a
talent for hamming his villain and really creating a memorable and exaggerated
character. Giving him a role with as much malleability as Kurtz lets him really
invent a villain that stands out among a cast of colorful and interesting
villains.
Vladimur Giursecu [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: N/A]: Vladimir Giurescu was a powerful vampire who was brought back to life by the goddess Hecate in the Late Middle Ages. He worked with, and was ultimately betrayed, by the Nazis during World War II. After the Nazis killed him, he was restored to life and finally defeated by Hellboy.
Gaspard Ulliel [Height: 5’ 11”,
Age: 34, Notable Works: Hannibal Rising, Saint Laurent, Eva]:
The Former Hannibal had left Hollywood, honing his craft in a number of
independent foreign films that has shown what he is capable off. With an
impressive body of work there really stands no one who could be as compelling
or as powerful in a role like Giurescu than Gaspard. He would be absolutely
perfect.
Radha Mitchell [Height: 5’ 6”, Age:
47, Notable Works: Silent Hill, The Crazies, Celeste]: A
very underutilized actress, Radha has been a favorite of mine since Silent
Hill. Having shown real depth and emotion in her roles there’s no doubt she
could take a challenge like Hecate and make the character something very easy
for an Audience to understand and appreciate.
Sylvia Hoeks [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 37,
Notable Works: The Best Offer, Blade Runner 2049, The Girl in
the Spider’s Web]: Sylvia has been one of the most surprising sensations as
far as acting goes. She’s done some phenomenal work starting in Blade Runner
and going through the recent adaptation of Steig Larrson’s Lisbeth Sanders
series. She’s a rising star and would be able to give some real energy and
emotion to a role like Ilsa.
Tom
Pelphrey [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 38, Notable Works: Iron Fist, Ozark,
Mank]: Tom is a fantastic actor. From his role in Iron First to Mank
he’s shown extraordinary talent that levels a sense of gravitas and interest in
his characters. There’s no doubt he’s an actor who can take a character like
Zinco and bring him to life appropriately, making him a specifically crazed and
odd character descending into madness.
Rhys Ifans [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 53,
Notable Works: The Amazing Spider-Man, Snowden, Berlin Station]:
Few actors ever seem to have as much fun playing bad guys as Rhys. Having
played numerous villains of all types, having him play a mad scientist to this
scale would be fun to see. He’s no doubt a fantastic actor and could really do
something unique and lasting with the role.
Svetlana Khodchenkova [Height: 5’
11”. Age: 38, Notable Works: The Wolverine, Viking, Dovlatov]:
Underutilized and under-appreciated Svetlana is an actress that has done some
fantastic work despite not getting the best characters. Having a very
impressive resume and list of performances she really stands out as a perfect
choice for Inger to give a deceptive and heart wrenching performance.
Matt Smith [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 38,
Notable Works: Doctor Who, Terminator Genysis, The Crown]:
A fantastic actor who’s been able to come out of his own since leaving Doctor
Who. He has got fantastic Energy and range, making him a prime candidate to
take the character of Kroenan and do something proper and enjoyable with the
role.
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson [Height: 6’
9”, Age: 32, Notable Works: Game of Thrones, Kickboxer: Retaliation,
Operation Ragnarok]: Unmensch is a character made to look not only
intimidating but also powerful. Hafþór stands as an actor unparalleled in his
ability to portray sadistic intimidation and frightening power and would make
for a good creature to give Hellboy a serious battle for his life.
Tilda
Swinton [Height: 5’ 11”, Age: 60, Notable Works: Constantine, Doctor Strange,
Suspiria]: There has never been a more transmorphic actress in our time then
Tilda Swinton. Having played roles of numerous characters and genders, she’s
shown that she really is a next level actress, something sorely required to
properly portray the Troll Witch.
Helena Bonham Carter [Height: 5’ 2”,
Age: 54, Notable Works: Corpse Bride,
Alice in Wonderland, The Crown]: Few actresses can be as creepy and energetic
and cruel in her performances as Helena. Her work as Bella Trix shows she can
play menacing villains, and her natural talent as an actress show she can pull
of more plotting and conniving characters. She’s a terrific actress and putting
her in Hellboy would guarantee a unique and one-of-a-kind performance.
Pilou Asbæk [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 38, Notable Works: Borgen, 1864, Game of Thrones]: Pilou is an actor who’s played one of the most sadistic villains in Euron, he created a character that brings an element of fear and ruthlessness to his performances. His work as Euron, his intimidating presence and demeanor are prime to give Koshchei the level of aw and fear the character requires.
Jon
Lovitz [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 63, Notable Works: Tales From the Crypt {Ep.
“Top Billing”}. Little Nicky, Sandy Wexler]: This role is a quintessential
Jon Lovitz character, so much so his voice is what I heard reading Igor’s
dialogue in the comic. Lovitz isn’t entirely a stranger to horror but with him
being an actor who’s played some of the slimiest characters, it’s nigh
impossible to see anyone else in this role. He’s pitch perfect and seeing him
do some darker material would only further expose what Lovitz is capable of as
an actor.
Peter
Dinklage [Height: 4’ 4”, Age: 51, Notable Works: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince
Caspian, Game of Thrones, X-Men Days of Future Past]: This is
a role pitch perfect for Peter. It’s very different from what he’s done before,
but with his talents as an actor and his Shakespearean talent make him the only
actor capable of making the character as ultimately sympathic as he becomes.
Peter is an actor who can bring a level of menace while also being a credible
threat to Hellboy and interesting character for the audience.
Anya
Chalotra [Height: 5’ 6”, Age: 24, Notable Works: Wanderlust, Sherwood,
The Witcher]: After her stunning and wonderful performance as Yennifer,
really there is no one else I can see in this role. Anya’s ability to play
sympathetic while also playing power hungry and immoral is a trait definitive
to make Nimue a character that stirs intrigue and argument over her goal. Anya
has taken a role and really shined bright in the role and made a deep
impression. If someone is going to make Nimue the villain she was in the comic
while adding any element of depth or heart, it’s going to be Anya.
Graham McTavish [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 60, Notable Works: The Hobbit {Trilogy}, Preacher, Castlevania]: Few actors are as intense, intimidating, and interesting as Graham. He’s an actor that plays, by nature, rough characters and giving him a more archetypal villain to play would really get him to find a way to evolve this character and make him a layered and 3-dimensional source of evil.
Michelle
Monaghan [Height: 5’ 7”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Eagle
Eye, The Craft: Legacy]: Monaghan is a sorely underappreciated
actress. Her work is dynamic and she harnesses a seductive ambiguity with many
of her characters. Putting her in a role like Gamori gets to show Michelle in a
more Seductive and Evil light then previously seen.
Ryan
Hurst [Height: 6’ 4”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Sons of Anarchy, Outsiders,
The Walking Dead]: This is really a perfect role for Hurst, in a role that
could essentially let him play an “Anti-Hellboy” creating a powerful and intriguing
antagonist for Hellboy to battle. Hurst is a wonderful actor who is absolutely
primed to take a role and make it a great and powerful villain.
Joe
Gilgun [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 36, Notable Works: Lockdown, Misfits,
Preacher]: One actor who I always love to see. He’s played a large
variety of characters and really does wonderful changing his persona in his
projects. It’s a role that’s wide open for Joe to play with and create
something memorable to his already growing repertoire of intriguing characters.
Peter
Stormare [Height: 6’ 2, Age: 67, Notable Works: Prison Break, Constantine,
Castelvania]: He’s always a wonderful actor to see in any production.
He’s a wonderful actor that has been able to use little screen time to conjure
a level of menace few actors couldn’t harness with hours of screen time. He’s a
perfect person to be the Duke of Hell and keep the character intimidating and
mysterious with the little appearances he’d make.
Landis Pope/Black Flame [Height: N/A, Age: 30’s]: Landis Pope succeeded as CEO of the Zinco Corporation following the death of Roderick Zinco. Pope continued his predecessor's ambitions with Grigori Rasputin, but instead seeking to gain the powers of the Ogdru Hem. Pope tasked his R&D department with studying the frog monsters, to the extent that Pope is able to both speak to them and control them. For purposes of safety, Pope wore a suit of reinforced black armor when dealing with the frogs, but this costume serves a second purpose: it personifies him as the mysterious Black Flame.
Toby
Kebbell [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 38, Notable Works: RocknRolla, Dawn of
the Planet of the Apes, Kong: Skull Island]: Kebbell is still a wonderful
actor. He’s done a lot of work that is underrated and even in the worst films
he’s been in, he’s far from the problem and often the best part of the film.
He’s got a lot to offer Comic Book adaptations and I want to see him get a
chance to really show that and Landis Pope is a perfect character.
Rory McCann [Height: 6’ 7”, Age: 51, Notable Works: Hot Fuzz, Solomon Kane, Game of Thrones]: Rory is a wonderful actor and seeing him take a role like this would put him in a role he’s never done before. He’s a strong and talented actor who’s played outlaws and every-men but with his talent and his work it would be fun to see him play a cult-leader. He’s got the talent and the presence to really pull it off and I’d love to see him take a shot at a role that’s as different from his work as this is.
Derek
Mears [Height: 6’ 5”, Age: 48, Notable Works: Friday the 13th,
Predators, Swamp Thing]: After a enjoyable turn in Swamp Thing,
having spent the majority of his career playing intimidating figures, Derek
stands as a wonderful choice to take on Yomyael and bring him to a live action

The idea would be to use Hellboy to springboard a B.P.R.D. Spin-Off Series and An Abe Sapien Limited Series, there’s numerous characters that would benefit from a Spin-Off (i.e. Rasputin, The Lobster, Johann Kraus, Koschei) as well as Prequel “Specials” (I.E. Animated Movies, Series, or Live Action Short Films/Special Episodes) or Limited Series featuring Hellboy, well before the start of this series. There are dozens of possibilities where they can take the story and expand it with the characters presented in the universe. It is building a Mignola-verse based on his characters.
Although HELLBOY is a series that has a beginning, middle, and end the work’s that’s inspired the series are not alone, as the comic itself has spun off several other titles, there exist other titles for future series. With the potential of spin-off series, prequels series, direct-to-streaming films, and limited series there is a wealth of material for the Mignolaverse to be adapted. As Hellboy would leave the Bureau in Season Three, this leaves open the ability to spin off into a series “B.P.R.D.” with a new set of characters joining the established Agents from Hellboy.

Introduction of characters like Abe Sapien, Rasputin, and Koshchei The
Deathless there are the opportunities for limited series exploring each of
these characters in depth with the potential of further seasons for any of
those characters. Finally, this Series follows Hellboy in modern times yet
there exist the large possibility of a prequel series or seasons of a limited
series detailing his adventures before our series begins. This is a franchise of limitless potential,
taking a new look at horror through a fantastical lens unlike any other horror
icon out there. This is HELLBOY.
Hey, it's TheHero coming from CBM! First off, love the cast, crew, and series pitch! Would totally love to see this be made. Just curious, but which channel do you think this would be suited for? I'm thinking maybe HBO or a streamer like Amazon...
ReplyDeleteNetflix, they signed a first look deal with Dark Horse in 2019, so the series would go there.
