BATMAN YEAR ONE LIMITED SERIES FANCAST

Production Designer: A production designer or P.D is the person responsible for the overall look of a filmed event such as films, TV programs, video games, music videos or adverts. Production designers have one of the key creative roles in the creation of motion pictures and television. Working directly with the director and producer, they must select the settings and style to visually tell the story.

Dan Bishop [Notable Works: A Single Man, Mad Men, Counterpart]: His most popular and well-known work is steeped in a 1960’s setting. He’s a master at his craft of applying the common threads of an era and making what you see visually fit in a context that doesn’t feel odd or out of place. Giving him a challenge such as a Batcave or much dirtier city would be fitting of his talents and work. He’s a hell of a Production Designer and would certainly create a unique and amazing Gotham City that plays both Dark Hellscape and daytime Metropolitan Achievement.

Costume Designer: A costume designer is a person who designs costumes for a film, television series, or stage production. The role of the costume designer is to create the characters and balance the scenes with texture and color, etc. The costume designer works alongside the director, scenic, lighting designer, sound designer, and other creative personnel. The costume designer may also collaborate with hair stylist, wig master, or makeup artist. In European theatre, the role is different, as the theatre designer usually designs both costume and scenic elements.

Odette Gadoury [Notable Works: Punisher: War Zone, The Phantom, Blood & Treasure]: A wonderful Costume designer that has a lot of experience detailing a more tactical outfits for characters. Her work in Punisher War Zone is astonishing and her work in Syfy’s The Phantom is inspired and has the DNA of what a batsuit should look like. She’s a wonderful Costume Designer and seeing what she would come up with a 70’s-esq Batsuit would be absolutely delightful.

Cinematographer: A cinematographer (usually credited with the title director of photography, or DP) is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film and television series, responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. The study and practice of this field is referred to as cinematography.

Darius Khondji [Notable Works: Se7en, Too Old To Die Young, Uncut Gems]: To make Gotham look properly drab and depressing you need a Cinematographer experienced in making beautiful cities look grim and depressing. With his work on Se7en alone the perfect attributes and now his work on Uncut Gems standing out beautifully, there’s really no other choice to do a 70’s era Gotham and making it look properly depressing and seedy.

Series Composer: A television score (also sometimes called tv music, background music, or incidental music) is original music written specifically to accompany a television show. The score forms part of the series' soundtrack, which also usually includes dialogue and sound effects, and comprises a number of orchestral, instrumental or choral pieces called cues which are timed to begin and end at specific points during an episode in order to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact of the scene in question.

Paul Leonard-Morgan [Notable Works: Dredd, Limitless, Cyberpunk 2077]: A wonderful composer whose work is timeless. His score for Dredd is adrenaline fueled with beats of dramatic tension. His work has given him a perfect template to do something wholly unique and distinguished for a Batman score. There’s no doubt Paul would be perfect to orchestrate the score for a series like this.

Showrunner: A showrunner is the leading producer of a television series. They are credited as an executive producer, and simply as a producer. A showrunner has creative and management responsibility of a television series production through combining the responsibilities of employer, and in comedy or dramas, typically also character creator, head writer, and script editor. In films, the director has creative control of a production, but in television, the showrunner outranks the episodic directors.

Joe Carnahan [Notable Works: Narc, Smokin’ Aces, State of Affairs]: His work is gritty and hard hitting. He’s had numerous screenplays hit the best of the blacklist and his original screenplay for the Death Wish remake was lauded for being one of the best scripts ever written. He had a pitch for a Daredevil reboot trilogy set in the 70’s and 80’s. His notes and what he had said about for his Daredevil reboot is exactly why he’s perfect for this version of Batman. He’s a fantastic writer and director and with the idea I have for a Batman Year One series, there’s no one better to execute that vision than Joe Carnahan.

Bruce Wayne/Batman [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 25]: Gotham’s native son. He spent 5 years abroad studying and honing his skills in detective work as well as rudimentary chemistry and 7 years entangled in Vietnam to physically prepare for his homegrown war against crime. He returns home unsure of how he can fulfill his promise, exploring Gotham and discovering the truly deplorable state of it. Bruce’s true self is Batman. A hard hitting and very serious vigilante. The product of years of military service and scholarly study in the form of a human being in his peak physical condition. Using combat training as well as a host of theatrics he becomes a strong and powerful force in Gotham. He shows only disgust towards criminals. He begins to force change in Gotham both positively and negatively.

Ansel Elgort [Height: 6’ 3”, Age: 25, Notable Works: Baby Driver, Billionaire Boys Club, Tokyo Vice]: Ansel is an amazing actor. He’s widely considered a rising star and has put out some strong and consistent work. His performances have ranged dark, silent, and contemplative. He’s got a great voice and a frame that could build appropriate muscle. There’s no doubt that he could play the role and do something deep, emotional, and hard hitting in a way that hasn’t been done before. For a Year One Batman there’s no better choice.

Alfred Pennyworth [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 54]: Longtime butler of the Wayne Family and Bruce’s legal guardian after the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Caring deeply for Bruce he joins him on the crusade, trying his best to keep Bruce safe. He applies his knowledge of field surgery to his efforts in helping Bruce, often mockingly calling himself “Batman’s Bat-Man.”

Jerome Flynn [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 56, Notable Works: Ripper Street, Game of Thrones, John Wick Chapter 3: Parrabellum]: An actor who’s been making a mark in recent years. He’s given a consistently entertaining performance in Game of Thrones and was a welcome addition in John Wick Chapter 3. He’s got the voice that really suggest both a rough lifetime and a refined taste. In recent years we’ve gotten away from the classic refined butler Alfred for a more militaristic and wise-man approach. Jerome’s an actor who would no doubt be able to hark back to the refined nature of the character and infuse that wise-man approach to give us a fresh take on Alfred with some sorely missed traits. He’s absolutely perfect for this role.

Detective James Gordon [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 43]: An old-world cop from Chicago forced into Gotham. Battling his own demons, he tries to make the best of his situation, but when he finds himself unable to change his nature, he starts his own war to make Gotham a more habitable world. He finds himself begrudgingly respecting Batman and wonders what hope the city really has, to be a decent place.

Hugh Dancy [Height: 5’ 11”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Hannibal, The Path, Homeland]: His performance on Hannibal is easily one of the best performances on a television series I’ve ever come across. He’s a strong actor that certainly can tap into the everyman aspect of Gordon. Hugh has done roles playing with a sense of duality, trauma, and emotional turmoil and that’s something that would be unique and fresh to see on Gordon. He’s got the look, the size and the overall demeanor to play the perfect Jim Gordon.

Barbara Gordon [Height: 5’ 4”, Age: 38]: Gordon’s very loving wife, pregnant with a son. She’s emotionally strong but finds herself struggling as she feels Gotham does nothing but poison their marriage. She forces herself to battle through as she worries for Gordon and his efforts in the GCPD.

Elizabeth Moss [Height: 5’ 3”, Age: 37, Notable Works: Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Kitchen]: An actress who’s proven she has more to venture in the arts then just one popular show. With stellar work between Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale, Elizabeth has stood out as a wonderful actress and has really proven herself as a strong individual. She has the qualities to really portray Barbara honestly with vulnerabilities and strength, an absolute necessity for this series.

Detective Sarah Essen [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 38]: A Sergeant in the Gotham City Police Department. She struggles through the department as everyone in the precinct sees her as a little more than eye candy. With other officers distracted she’s been able to climb the ranks and has proven herself one of the most dedicated cops in Gotham.

Jennifer Carpenter [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 40, Notable Works: Dexter, Limitless, The Enemy Within]: I’ve always been a massive fan of Jennifer’s. When it came to casting Sarah there was only one choice I could come up with. Jennifer, in her own right, is everything that Essen was described in the Books. She’s got the looks, attitude, and presence that make her perfect for the role.

Lucius Fox [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 30]: Brilliant research scientist who left the army and went to Langley. He’s known Bruce since their first tour together and has shown some ability to do amazing things given little to work with. He becomes Bruce’s primary confidant when it comes to making his gear as Batman. He cares deeply for Bruce and feels the need to make something to benefit the world.

Eka Darville [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 30, Notable Works: Power Range RPM, Mister Pip, Jessica Jones]: A much better than I anticipated. Through the three seasons of Jessica Jones he’s been consistent in giving interesting and layered performances. He’s shown a wide range and has a certain presence to him that makes him ideal to play this younger version of Lucius. There’s no doubt he could stand out and make something unique of the role.

Harvey Dent [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 35]: A former mentor and childhood friend of Bruce. He spent his youth living in the rough areas of Gotham and always took care of Bruce in school. Now he stands as one of Gotham’s Assistant District Attorneys fighting the losing battle. He forces his way through knowing that there must be good things coming to Gotham.

Boyd Holbrook [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 38, Notable Works: Narcos, Logan, The Predator]: One of my favorite actors working today. He’s an actor that has a great amount of charm and charisma, making him ideal for a Harvey Dent on the right side of the law. He’s a strong actor and would stand out as one of the most charismatic takes on Harvey Dent since Billy Dee Williams.

Detective Harvey Bullock [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 38]: A cop who feels the disgust of how Gotham has been operating for years. Seeking a life with dignity and result he flips on the corrupt center of GCPD after he is inspired by Gordon and Dent’s efforts. He joins them and becomes a strong ally in taking down Commissioner Loeb.

Roger Clark [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 38, Notable Works: Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Red Dead Redemption 2]: probably one of the most controversial choices, Roger Clark is more well known for his voice acting than his live action appearances. It comes as no shock that in his live action appearances, he’s a great actor. He’s got the look and grit to really bring a serious gravitas to Bullock and could stand out in the series as an amazing take on the beloved character.

Jack Ryder [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 48]: Longtime reporter for Gotham Gazette. He’s spent his career trying to expose the truth to everyone in Gotham. Once he discovers the Riddler he becomes obsessed with the madman and makes it his personal mission to taking him down.

Jon Hamm [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 48, Notable Works: The Day The Earth Stood Still, Mad Men, Richard Jewell]: Jon is a fantastic actor that numerous fans have wanted to see break into the world of comic book adaptations. With strong performances geared towards adult content and looking like one of the most serious individuals, he makes for a perfect Jack Ryder. He’s got a voice, a face, and a presence to play a hard-hitting new journalist.

Vicki Vale [Height: 5’ 3”, Age: 24]: Reporter for the Gotham’s Gossip Magazine.  She covers the return of Bruce Wayne while hoping to do something meaningful as a reporter. She covers every Batman sighting she can, seeing it as a step towards being a real journalist.

Adelaide Kane [Height: 5’ 4”, Age: 29, Notable Works: Reign, The Purge, Once Upon A Time]: A wonderful actress who’s really beginning to show her range. She’s a strong performer and has brought some of her best work through television. She’s got a good look and presence that makes her ideal for Vicki Vale.

Superman [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 30]: Rocketed to Earth form the doomed planet Krypton, Superman was raised as Clark Kent, a Kansas Farm Boy who grew up to be a mild-mannered reporter. Superman is an apolitical figure asked to join the Vietnam war by President Nixon. Superman joins to stop the bloodshed. Superman is highly empathetic and holds a very popular no killing policy, he stands as a bastion of Good American Morals.

Lou Ferrigno Jr. [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 35, Notable Works: S.W.A.T., Muse, Stargirl]: Son of the original Increidble Hulk, Lou Jr. has been making a unique name for himself. Staring the TV Reboot of the 1970’s series: S.W.A.T, appearing in Muse and set to appear in Stargirl – Lou is making his name well known. He’s a strong actor with a fitting look, size, and presence to play the iconic Superhero for this series.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman [Height: 5’ 5”, Age: 26]: Born in China she was brought to Gotham at a young age. She learned quickly to take care of herself and has worked hard to keep her dignity. She acts as a dominatrix until she is inspired to take more control of her life by the Batman. She allows herself to evolve and becomes Catwoman.

Lyrica Okano [Height: 5’ 2”, Age: 25, Notable Works: Runaways, Pimp, Story Game]: Runaways has lifted some very unique and wonderful talent, with Lyrica being the most standout of the series ensemble. This was a very different version of Catwoman, to make her origin all the seedier and darker, it needed an actress that could pull of the multiple sides of the character. Lyrica has stood out and made herself known as an actress that could really evolve her character and go to that darker place and it made her perfect for this rendition of Catwoman.

Holly Robinson [Height: 4’ 9”, Age: 12]: Acting as Selina’s ward. She is a trained pickpocket and is carefully watched over by Selina. She tries to grow up to the speed of how Gotham is. She holds no regard for her childhood as being a child in Gotham is dangerous.

Cailey Fleming [Height: N/A, Age: 12, Notable Works: Hover, Peppermint, The Walking Dead]: For Holly, as a character, you need someone who has a dark sense of optimism but also a view of innocence that hasn’t been stamped out. She’s still in many ways a kid who’s just exposed to a bad life. Caily, as an actress, has done that in spades working on The Walking Dead. She’s a really good actress and would shine in the role.

Sheila Haywood [Height: 5’ 4”, Age: 24]: A member of the Red Hoods and concubine to their leader Jack Napier. She was loyal to the cause until she fell in love with Willis Todd. She seeks a way out so that she and Willis could start a family together. She shows a deeply inviting personality layered with compassion. Seeing Willis fall breaks her, causing her to flee Gotham.

Natalia Dyer [Height: 5’ 4”, Age: 24, Notable Works: I Believe in Unicorns, Stranger Things, Velvet Buzzsaw]: Natalia is a very lovable actress. Her work on Stranger Things has stood out and really developed her, while she continues to do different things to expand her range. She’s someone who could really play with the role and make Sheila every bit as likeable as she is in this adaptation.

Jack Napier/Red Hood #1 [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 32]: Leader of the Red Hoods. A self-obsessed Charles Manson-like anarchist. He takes every chance he gets to turn his followers against polite society as a way of controlling his environment. He becomes jealous after witnessing one of his concubines with one of his followers, Willis Todd.

Evan Peters [Height: 5’ 11”, Age: 32, Notable Works: American Horror Story, X-Men: Days of Future Past, I Am Woman]: Evan is an actor that has really expanded his range. Working on American Horror Story he’s really shown what he’s capable of. There’s no doubt he’s capable of taking the role and adding an appropriate Manson-Like Quality fitting the character. He’s a stronger actor and a dramatic and fanatic role like this would undoubtedly show what he can do.

Dr. Willis Todd/The Joker [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 32]: A Former chemist who joined the radicalism “Red Hoods” movement. This resulted in falling in love with a member of the leader’s concubine. The leader, Jack Napier, caused Willis to be thrown in a vat of Chemicals turning him into the Joker. Sporting white skin, green hair, and a red smile Willis becomes a Psychopathic Monster.

Dane Dehaan [Height: 5’ 8”, Age: 33, Notable Works: Chronicle, A Cure for Wellness, The Kid]: It’s been a long road for Dehaan since Chronicle, he’s starred in some standouts and in some Critically panned films. This might come as controversial choice, but after giving a deep and heartfelt performance in A Cure for Wellness there’s no doubt he could take the Joker and do something stellar with the role. He’s got a good presence and a good range to take the Joker and make something wholly different and iconic with the role. He’s a strong actor and this would be a great role for him to stand out in, as well as wash out the sin from Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Dr. Jonathan Crane [Height: 6’ 3”, Age: 45]: Chief Chemist at Ace Chemicals, Dr. Jonathan Crane excelled as Psychiatry and Psychiatric Chemistry. Crane worked as a mentor to Willis Todd during the early stages of the MK Ultra Program. Together the two created the chemical agent that would turn Willis into the Joker, Agent Green. Crane continued his MK Ultra research after the programs was shut down, developing a psychoactive chemical agent that causes an individual to have frightening hallucinations and experience nightmare like sensations while awake. This chemical compound was dubbed Agent Yellow.

Toby Leonard Moore [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 38, Notable Works: John Wick, Daredevil, Billions]: It’s no secret that I am a massive fan of Moore’s work. He gives strong and interesting performances, when it came to envision this radically different take on Jonathan Crane there was no one other than Toby that could do it. He’s got all the makings to stand out perfect in the series and stand out as one of the better adaptations of the character.

Edward Nygma/The Riddler [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 36]: A Sociopathic serial killer with a god complex. Calling himself the Riddler, he sees himself as a higher being and begins a spree of murders similar to the Zodiac. Leaving cryptic riddles and clues in his wake as a way of showing his superiority. As he is exposed to Batman he becomes constantly obsessed and insulted by the vigilante’s appearance and makes it his personal mission to prove the Batman as a lesser being than himself.

Joe Gilgun [Height: 6’ 1”, Age: 35, Notable Works: Shameless, Lockout, Preacher]: He’s a great actor, he’s full potential hasn’t even been realized. He was great fun in Preacher and interesting and ominous in Lockout. It might seem strange casting him as a character like Riddler, but with his ability to play Ominous-natured villains and the theatrical stylings of this version rooted in the 1970’s, there’s no better actor capable of playing the role with such a sense of macabre vanity.

Jefferson Skeevers [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 43]: The top drug dealer in Gotham. With a penchant for getting himself in trouble he’s become very familiar with GCPD as well as A.D.A. Harvey Dent. He’s one of the few who works directly under the Falcone crime family he works in tandem with Flass, Loeb, and the GCPD. He lives a life he would describe as “Gangsta” while being unaware of the Batman and his effect on Gotham.

Curtis Jackson [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 44, Notable Works: Get Rich or Die Trying, Power, Den of Thieves]: Probably the most controversial choice on the list, he’s shown some talent as an actor. After seeing his performance in Den of Thieves, he seems to be the most fitting choice to play a character like Jefferson Skeevers.

Pimp Stan [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 40]: A local Pimp who ‘owned’ Selina and Holly until they rebelled. He’s accustomed to the way Gotham works and enjoys his life. He places fashion and appearance as the most important aspects for his business, feeling if he looks tough, people will think twice before messing with him.

Kirk Acevado [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 48, Notable Works: Oz, Fringe, Arrow]: He’s got a reputation for playing less than reputable individuals. He’s still a fantastic actor and stands out as one of the most convincing actors for this role.

S.W.A.T. Captain Howard Brendan [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 34]: Gotham Police Department S.W.A.T. Commander. Often labeled a psychopath with a badge. He shows little care or remorse in his work and is noted for taking more extreme measures. He holds an iron grip on his position and has become little more than Commissioner Loeb’s top assassin.

Josh Helman [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 33, Notable Works: Mad Max Fury Road, X-Men: Days of Future Past, My Name is Lenny]: He’s done some great work in small appearances as William Stryker, and had a fun memorable role in Fury Road. He’s got the look the attitude and size to play Branden and make the character every bit as vile and horrible as he did with Stryker.

Detective Arnold Flass [Height: 6’ 4”, Age: 44]: Former Green Beret and current GCPD Detective. He’s the favorite enforcer of Commissioner Loeb and often sees himself as living life in the Fastlane. He tries to make himself appear cool and approaches his job with the attitude of ‘shoot first, ask later.’ He has very few, if any, morals and stands as one of the most corrupt cops in Gotham.

Teddy Sears [Height: 6’ 2”, Age: 42, Notable Works: Masters of Sex, The Flash, 24: Legacy]: It’s hard to really picture anyone but Teddy in this role. He’s got the size, the charisma, and the presence that is talked about in describing Flass in the Year One comic. He’s played terrific villains and has always been a treat to watch on screen. There’s no one better for the role of Flass than Teddy.

D.A. Marion Grange [Height: 5’ 5”, Age: 50]: Gotham City District Attorney. Always keeping herself a step ahead she blocks everyone of Dent’s attempts to prosecute anyone relating to the Falcone Crime Family. She places her well-being and wealth above the ethics of her elected position, often toying with Dent and his aspirations to become D.A.

Carla Gugino [Height: 5’ 5”, Age: 48, Notable Works: San Andreas, Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House]: Carla is one of those actresses that seems to gain favor from everyone. She’s considered a treasure by fans and has done amazing work as an actress. With a role like Grange, you need someone that can really play to darker aspects but still keep a human element and few actresses can do that as well as Carla.

Mayor Wilson Klass [Height: 6’ 0”, Age: 54]: The Mayor of Gotham and one of many who take bribes from Falcone. He shows little to no interest in the actual welfare of Gotham. Always flashing a political smile, he shows nothing but disdain for Gotham and her people.

Dermot Mulroney [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 56, Notable Works: Zodiac, Station 19, The Purge]: A fun actor who’s made numerous appearances, often in comedic roles, that’s really just gained attention. He’s a great actor and would stand out with notable appearances to an already stellar cast. He’s got the look and voice to really take a character like Klass and do something to make the character more than an obscure Mayor of Gotham City.

Commissioner Gillian Loeb [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 64]: Corrupt Police Commissioner and twisted individual. He collects pop culture memorabilia and can, at time, regress to more childlike behavior. Once he gets wind of Gordon’s anti-corruption attitude he attempts to ‘correct’ Gordon as to how things work in Gotham. As time goes on Loeb becomes more and more paranoid that Falcone will get rid of him and appoint a new Police Commissioner.

Paul Schulze [Height: 5’ 9”, Age: 57, Notable Works: Panic Room, Rambo, The Punisher]: A Great actor and after watching his performance in The Punisher, he became the ideal choice to play a character like Loeb. He’s got the look and he’s familiar with playing characters who’re weak and corrupted trying to seize power. There’s no better choice for this version of Loeb.

Johnny Viti [Height: 6’ 3”, Age: 34]: Carmine Falcone’s nephew and chief enforcer. He’s a slow learner and has a quick temper but he makes up for his short comings with his depravity and what terrible acts he’s willing to do. He dreams of taking over for his uncle and early on sees Batman and Gordon as threats.

Cameron Britton [Height: 6’ 5”, Age: 33, Notable Works: Mindhunter, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Umbrella Academy]: He’s been a notable stand out in Mindhunter. He’s given creepy and intense performances. His talent coupled with his size and presence make him perfect to play a character like Viti. He’s a strong actor that could bring a sense of menace and intimidation to the role.

Carmine Falcone/The Roman [Height: 6’ 3”, Age: 63]: Lifelong Gotham resident and powerful crime lord. Having been raised in the worst parts of Gotham, Falcone made something of himself and accepted the city for its depravity. Gaining a taste for the theatrical he adopts the moniker “The Roman.” Using his resources, he has become the dark center of Gotham City.

Will Patton [Height: 5’ 10”, Age: 65, Notable Works: The Punisher, Halloween, Swamp Thing]: One of my favorite actors. He’s known for playing both villains and everymen. He’s had a legendary career, appearing in some of my favorite movies and television series. Through his career he’s built a presence, and a sense of intimidation that makes him the perfect choice to play someone like Carmine Falcone.
